| San Apollaire Nuovo
Ravenna, Italy 490 A.D. Built by Theodoric, king of Italy, it uses capitals imported from the workshops of the Eastern Empire. The most pleasing simplification of the design. Only 4 leaves instead of classical eight. Vestigal volutes. Below is a flipped fragment from a church near Thebes, Nea-Anchialos, a match from the same imperial quarry, dated 470 A.D. A close up of the acanthus carving. From Krautheimer's "Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture" |
